Reading is an important part of life and integral in the child's natural growth even before entering school. There are many ways for parents to help their children to recognize letters and words and to understand the connection between words and meanings.

It is believed by a lot of parents that the job of teaching their children to read is entirely up to their school teachers. This however is not always the case.

In classrooms, there is a high children to adult ratio and therefore very little focus and attention to each child's individual language and literacy growth. Parents have to realize that even before entrance to preschool, children should be exposed to words and literacy.

There are many ways to do this and that is the purpose of this web page I have created. Developing a child's reading skills is just like developing the child's language abilities. It should be done in a non-threatening environment surrounded with real life examples.

To the left I have links to linguistic researches on developing children's literacy skills and the beliefs behind them. I also have links to websites that give examples of helping children develop reading skills. This includes using cereal boxes, television, notes, shopping lists and of course story books!

Please feel free to look around and I hope that this page will be useful and will lend a helping hand to some struggling parents.

Thanks for dropping by!
